PCA - Southern Arizona Region "Charity Support"
The Southern Arizona Region (SAR) has a long and rich history of charitable activities. Our club raises money for selected
charities twice a year, at our Cinco de Mayo event in May and, at our Charity autocross in October. Inaddition, we participate
in several charity events organized by other local groups.
We support three major charities:
- Tucson Arthritis Support League
- Arts Express Fine Arts Youth Academy
- Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities - Child Family Services

Fine Arts Youth Academy
|
Arts Express believes the arts can change lives and build a better community.
The Fine Arts Youth Academy opens up the world of the arts to children. The Academy
gives school age children the opportunity to participate in opera, dance, orchestra, band,
visual arts, mariachi, folklorico dance, and musical theatre. Fees are purposely kept low so
that children of every socioeconomic status can participate. Even so, over thirty percent of
the students receive scholarships funded through donations and the revenues generated from
Arts Express productions.
An SAR member sits on the Arts Express Board.

Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities
Child Family Services

Distribution of Holiday Food Baskets is an annual charitable activity for our Region.
For over twenty years, and SAR member and Child Family Services employee, has worked with
the department staff to convert our contributions to food baskets, and to determine which
families can be supported each year.
The selected families include children who have developmental disabilities, or are at risk
of a developmental disability. These disabilities can include Down Syndrome, Cebrebal Palsy,
extreme pre-maturity, complex medical needs, and many families with a child that has multiple
issues. The Child Family Services staff supports each family by helping them to look at the
resources they have within their own family, friends, church, and their community, as well.

Cinco de Mayo
|
For the past several years, our Region's signature event -- our Cinco de Mayo
Weekend -- has been the primary vehicle for SAR charitable activities.
For 2007, two charities, TASL, the Tucson Arthritis Support League and
Arts Express Fine Arts Youth Academy, were selected to share the Weekend
proceeds equally. Both charities benefit from SAR members being included
in their volunteer base.
Sources of charity funds from the Cinco Weekend include earnings from
the Concours Silent Auction and Autocross participants, as well as donations
from members independently.

Charity Autocross - Holiday Food Basket Distribution
|
For more than 20 years, the club has been donating food baskets to
needy families in November and December. Our annual October Charity
Autocross is the primary source of funds for Thanksgiving and December Holiday
food baskets. Independent donations are also often made for the purchase of these
food baskets, as well.
We have donated several hundred dollars worth of food each year for several years.
One of our members organizes purchasing of food and assembling it into baskets, then
distributes the baskets at the holidays. Since our SAR member works for the Division
of Developmental Disabilities Child Family Services, she is able to determine who can
most benefit from our donations.
These donations are made in memory of a club member who passed away several years ago,
Dick Huhn. Dick donated his time to purchase food for baskets and then delivered the
baskets to the families supported by Child Family Services. He did this for many years
and after Dick passed away, the club made the decision to continue his tradition of giving.
